Inexpensive Thanksgiving Table Decorations

Written by Becky

Setting the table is one of my favorite parts of any special meal. I’ve found that you can create beautiful Thanksgiving table decorations with a small budget or even no budget. Last weekend at our SLCmixer with Rue De Lis Desserts I had the opportunity to set our table in true fall fashion and in perfect preparation for our Thanksgiving decorating soon to come. Here are some simple elements for designing a Thanksgiving tablescape:

Mix-and-match fall colored plates
Bust out grandma’s silver or borrow silver from a friend
Find vintage napkins, inherited from grandma, or find at a local thrift store
Gather leaves and acorns from the yard or a park close by
Display two bouquets of fall flowers
Place name cards using old wine corks
Have recipe cards at each place setting
Use old ball glass jars for vases

At this Thanksgiving Dessert gathering Hillary from Rue De Lis also set up an amazing dessert bar, which you can find pictures of at She gave great inspiration for those in charge of the desserts this holiday season, including tips on inexpensive decor and table-ware. She’s also available for hire if you need someone else to supply your desserts this holiday season. And believe me, her desserts are scrumptious!

My job remains the same for our gatherings, setting an inviting table for our guests. Here are some more in-depth tips on setting your table this Thanksgiving: For my plates, I found both the yellow plates and the brown and white fall plates at local antique stores. I don’t have full sets of either so I mix-and-match them with plates I already have. As for leaves, I literally just picked up a bunch of leaves from my front yard to scatter along the table. You could also go to a park and go leaf hunting for a variety of fall leaves. Combine this with some found pinecones and other natural elements for more free table decor. If you don’t want to purchase flowers you can place leftover herbs from your Thanksgiving cooking into vases or jars or fill vases with found pinecones and leaves. I also love filling jars and vases with seasonal fruit or vegetables. To make place card holders, use a sharp knife to make a small slit in the top of each wine cork. Slide the name card into the cork and place the cork at each plate setting.

Decorating the table for our Thanksgiving SLCmixer was a blast and I hope it gave you some inspiration for your table this year!

  1. My mom always cuts bunchs of herbs from her planter boxes and hangs them to dry. Then when Thanksgiving rolls around she places them in jelly jars around the table (so they are low enough for people to see over), interspersed with gourds from her garden, and mini plates of fruit like grapes and clementines that people can snack on. I love your wine cork placecards by the way.

  2. I truly love your website.. Very nice colors & theme.
Did you build this amazing site yourself? Please reply back
as I’m looking to create my very own blog and want to learn where you got this from or what the theme is named. Many thanks!
