Vintage Mixer Travels - Rio de Janiero

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Written by Becky

I created Vintage Mixer to share my vacation to Rio de Janeiro with friends and family.   Josh and I journeyed to Brazil to meet up with his mom who lived there for 8 years.  It was Josh’s first visit to see her as well as mine and we were both first timers to the country. It was an incredible trip.  We spent two weeks in Brazil and flew from there to spend 9 days in Costa Rica.  We cherished every minute and took home lots of fun memories.

We rode a funicular up to see the Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer Statue). The view was spectacular, definitely worth of being one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.  To stand at the foot of the statue looking up showed a something great about man’s abilities to do build great things in challenging places.  But to look out over the city and ocean and mountains showed a power of a different kind.

I’ve stood on the Great Wall of China, in the middle of Red Square, overlooking the Costa Rican rainforests and on Rialto Bridge in Venice, but I think this view topped them all.

A visit to Rio would not not be complete without also riding a cable car across the waters to Sugarloaf (top picture). It’s equal parts terrifying and magnificent.  Once you get there, sip a cool beverage, take in the sites then head back.  I recommend the caipirinha made from the Brazilian favorite Cachaça,

When we weren’t throwing ourselves into the tourism of the area we were walking the streets of Impanema, sipping on a coconut at the beach, picking up pão de queijo on the streets (Brazilian cheese bread) or enjoying traditional Brazilian fare. Every moment was special but the best part was stepping into my mother-in-law’s world and seeing how much she adored this new home of hers. She was truely becoming a Brazilian!

  1. A trip-report worthy of starting such a great blog! Thanks for spreading the Brazzy Love. I’m also about to try out your feijoada recipe, so thanks for sharing!

    • Do you have Brazilian connections Andy? You’ll have to let me know what you think of the feijoada recipe. I really want to learn how to make the sawdust- stuff that comes on top of feijoada!

  2. Hi Becky, the sawdust-stuff you mentioned is called yucca/manioc flour and you can make it at home unless you know how to extract the poison. Contact me privately and I can give you some to enjoy 😉
