Before making this recipe for Chocolate Cherry Scones from the French Laundry I must admit that I had no idea what people meant when they said scones have a ‘tender crumb’. The decadent nature of these scones with butter and heavy cream make for the most tender crumb I’ve every tasted. You have to just try for yourself I think. These scones were made for one of our food gatherings. We kicked off our line up of Fall SLCmixers with a perfect paring of Indian Food and Beer. And of course, I could’t let my guests go home empty handed so they each took with them a chocolate cherry scone to enjoy for breakfast the next morning. Going along with the Indian food theme these scones had a hint of curried sugar sprinkled on top but that’s totally optional if you make the recipe at home.

I had a hard time coming up with something sweet to go with Indian food then finally came up with the idea of adding a hint of curry sprinkled with sugar on top of these tasty scones (recipe adapted from The French Laundry). What are your thoughts on Indian food sweets or sweets with curry in them? Any recipes or ideas you’d like to share?
a signature scone from the famous French Laundry Restaurant
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (or Cup4Cup for gluten-free)
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1¾ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1½ teaspoons kosher salt
- 2¼ sticks unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch pieces
- 1¼ cups heavy cream
- 1¼ cups dried cherries
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 2 tablespoons skim milk
- 1 tablespoon Morrello cherry puree
- 1/4 teaspoon yellow curry
- 1 tablespoon raw sugar
- Preheat oven to 350°F with racks in upper and lower thirds.
- Whisk together flour, sugar, powder, soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Using your hands or a pastry cutter, cut in butter until combined with some pea-sized lumps. Stir in cream, cherries, and chocolate chips until combined.
- Place 1/4-cup scoops of dough on 2 buttered baking sheets and bake, switching sheets half way through, until golden and cooked through, 16 to 20 minutes.
- While scones are baking, make the glaze by whisking together sugar, milk, and cherry puree together in a small bowl until combined.
- Once scones are cooled, spoon over glaze, let set, and enjoy.
- used a mortar and pestle grind together the sugar and curry until the sugar takes on a yellow tint. Sprinkle over the cherry glaze.
