I received so many amazing quotes and friendly notes from my post last week that is was hard to choose just one, so I chose two! You will both receive two gift certificates to Tony Caputo's tasting class of your choice. Check out their site for more info on dates and times of classes.
My two winners are:
ilikewinter "The future is no place to place your better days"
& this one made me laugh...
dualori "Eat the fish, spit out the bones."
You can send your addresses to vintagemixer at yahoo dot com.
Some of my other favorites:
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
"Love is when you are okay with the other person's nerdiness."
"Work smarter, not harder"

On another completely separate note...I have a dear friend who has just moved to Berlin to work for one of the best graphic font artists in the world. In order to take the job he has to leave his cute wife for a couple of months. So, now he is living in Germany in a small apartment and in dire need of some foodie advice. Keep in mind that he is not a cook and likes rather simple foods (meat, potatoes, some vegetables), and doesn't have access to a microwave. What do you recommend? If you have ideas, post them to the comments or post links to easy recipes. Much thanks for helping my desperately hungry friend. Last time we chatted with him he was eating sandwich bread for dinner!
(yes, that picture is actually him, and I thought it fit quite nicely with this plea for help)
You can check out his Berlin Food Adventures on his blog here.
A quick and tasty dinner we often make is BBQ chicken sandwiches. Buy a roasted chicken, pull the meat off, mix it with some heated BBQ sauce and serve on a nice roll. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteNo need to be hungry in Germany! In case of "need food immediately" our family loves canned soups/stews from Erasco, you get them in every grocery store like Kaisers, Edeka, Bolle or Meyer Beck (but not Aldi!). Frozen Pizza is best from Dr. Oetker or Wagner ...
ReplyDeleteAnother favourite is Spaghetti Carbonara: 1.)cook 250g spaghetti (=half a package, enough for 1 or 2 people). 2.) fry some diced bacon. 3.) mix together one egg, a dash (1/2 cup) of cream (=Sahne), salt, pepper and some minced garlic. 4.) drain spaghetti, put them in the hot pan that still has the bacon grease in it, and stir for some seconds 5.) pour the egg/cream mixture over spaghetti, stir until spaghetti are covered and mixture becomes dry and chunky. 6.) add the bacon and enjoy!
How about baked pasta with Italian Sausage? It's easy to make for one, or make a big pan and eat leftovers.

I will stop now, I just don't want your friend to starve:)
Dear SLCFoodie (and all you other helpful people),
ReplyDeleteI am appreciative of your help, but I got it under control now. I even started my own cooking blog. Check it out.

Ok, seriously though, thanks for the help. Those are some good suggestions. For now, I just make really big portions of everything so I don't have to cook too often. Maybe soon I'll really like it. Maybe not.
But seriously. Thanks
Germans have fantastic breads, cheeses, and meats. My absolute favorite meals are fresh baked bread with some farmer's cheese, deli meats, and some fresh produce. Simple and easy.
ReplyDeleteTo eat in Berlin:
Weisswurst
Gelbwurst (I even love the kind with parsley)
Sauerbraten (to order at restaurant)
Make friends with your local butcher or wurst maker and start trying all the incredible varieties!
Nothing like a stew: prepare in the morning, leave simmering on low or in an oven safe-dish at a low temp, and when you get back home at night it's ready to go. Brown beef or prok cubes, add onions, red peppers, paprika, a little tomato paste, some beef stock or red wine, simmer all day. Serve over boiled potatoes or even noodles. Keeps for days.
