For Christmas this year my mom gave me the original Betty Crocker’s Cooky Book. I can’t believe it took me this long to try out one of the recipes! At the back of the book there is a ‘best of’ section and I chose the best of 1890-1900, the Cinnamon Jumble. Yea that’s right 1890!! My Grandmother wasn’t even born yet, but there were plenty of women baking cookies! Apparently Jumbles were the “popular cooky of the gay nineties,” and different women and different communities had their own version of Jumbles: Philadelphia Jumbles, Peppermint Jumbles, and even Wine Jumbles. This fluffy sugar cookie will remind you of simpler times. Don’t be surprised if you can’t eat just one. You should try them- or at least start spelling cookie – cooky.

Cinnamon Jumbles

INGREDIENTS
1/2 C shortening
1 C sugar
1 egg
4/3 C buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
2 C flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 C sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

INDTRUCTIONS
Mix shortening, 1 C sugar, and egg thoroughly. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Measure flour by dipping method (described in book by dipping measuring cup into your flour container and then leveling off with a knife)Blend together flour, soda, and salt. Stir in. Chill dough.
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with mixture of 1/4 C sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Bake 8-10 minutes or until set but not brown. Makes 4 dozen 2 inch cookies.

  1. I brought some of these to work today but with green food coloring…they didn’t look so hot! One fellow emploee asked if there was pepper on top. So, apparently cinnamon/sugar looks like pepper on a green cooky. Bad combo!

  2. Amazing – my mom has made these since I was a kid for xmas every year and they are by far my favourite cookie. Who knew they were from a cookbook so old!
